At least 1,119 athletes participated in this year’s Binga Kasambabezi Marathon (BKM), held on Saturday, marking an increase of 85% from last year’s 600 participants.
The marathon, hosted in Binga attracted participants from other countries such as Botswana, Zambia, and Kenya and had inititally expected to draw around 700 attendees. The remarkable turnout underscores the significance of the marathon in the lives of the participants. The marathon featured several categories: 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, and 2 km.
During an interview, Ronald Siamwamwata, the District Sports Coordinator under the Ministry of Sports and Culture, expressed gratitude for the impressive attendance from various regions. He noted that this event is not merely a competition but a testament to the importance of marathons as a form of physical exercise. “The marathon is part of body exercise,” Siamwamwata said.
Recent Ncube, the district organizer for the Kasambabezi Marathon, shared his insights, emphasizing that young people should view the marathon not only as a sport but also as an essential form of exercise that helps combat many diseases associated with a sedentary lifestyle. He anticipates greater youth participation in future events, highlighting the potential for the marathon to address issues related to drug and substance abuse as well as early marriages.
